How much does a website really cost in Bristol?

We get asked this every week. The honest answer: it depends on who builds it — and whether you're paying for the website, or paying for an agency's overheads.

01The Bristol agency benchmark

Walk into any Bristol web design agency — Grizzly, Mr B & Friends, Bluestone98 — and you'll typically be quoted between £3,000 and £15,000 for a small-business website. Bigger studios can quote £25,000+ for anything with bookings or e-commerce.

That covers discovery sessions, a creative director, designers, developers, project managers, and a polished pitch deck. It's good work. It's also more than most local businesses ever needed to spend.

02The hidden costs nobody mentions upfront

The quote you sign is rarely what you end up paying. Watch for:

  • Hosting: £15–£60/month, often on a third-party plan you have to manage.
  • Maintenance retainers: £100–£400/month for "support" you may rarely use.
  • Change requests: £80–£150/hour after launch. Add a paragraph? That's a bill.
  • SEO bolt-ons: £500–£2,000/month if you want to actually rank.
  • Re-designs every 2–3 years because the original site wasn't built to last.

A "£5,000 website" frequently becomes £8,000–£12,000 in the first year alone.

03DIY builders: cheap until they aren't

Wix and Squarespace start at £7–£18/month. By the time you've added a custom domain, booking widget, premium template, e-commerce, and SEO apps, most local businesses are paying £30–£50/month — plus 20–40 hours of their own time learning the platform.

And if you're a Bristol salon, tradesperson or café trying to outrank competitors on Google, a slow, templated builder site is fighting with one hand tied behind its back. Page speed and clean code are direct ranking factors.

04The Pixiware model: one honest price

We built Pixiware because the maths above made us uncomfortable. So we flipped it:

  • £0 to build. No deposit. No discovery fee. No catch.
  • £25/month, everything included — hosting, edits, technical SEO, security, support.
  • Bristol-based — we reply to messages, usually same-day.
  • No lock-in — you own your domain, cancel anytime.

Across a year, that's £300. Across five years, £1,500. For a custom, fast, SEO-optimised site with a real human looking after it.

05So what should you actually budget?

Be honest about what you need:

  • Side project or hobby: DIY on Wix or Squarespace. £15–£50/month.
  • Local business that wants to be found on Google: Pixiware at £25/month — or a Bristol agency from £3,000 upfront if you prefer the traditional route.
  • Large e-commerce or complex platform: A specialist agency, £15,000+.

For most Bristol businesses we talk to — barbers, plumbers, cafés, consultants, photographers — option two is the right answer. And we'd say that even if we charged what the agencies do.
